** HEY. THIS ISN’T ABOUT ANYONE IN PARTICULAR, I’VE JUST RAN INTO THIS A LOT OVER THE YEARS, ESPECIALLY IN COLLEGE, BECAUSE EVERY INDIE FUCK WITH A GUITAR THINKS HE IS THE END-ALL ON MUSIC KNOWLEDGE. THIS ISN’T MEANT TO OFFEND. UNLESS YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE LITTLE FUCKS. IN WHICH CASE, GO FUCK YOURSELF, CUNT.
Everyone knows that music is one of the strongest forms of self-expression. However, not all of us are lucky enough to pick up that guitar and play our happiness, angst, or sorrow out on those strings or open our mouths to the heavens and let our fucking gorgeous voices ring through the goddamn hills. Ya know? So, what do we do? We listen to the beautiful creations that other, much more gifted people, have released out into the world simply for our pleasures of expression. (and to, in turn, express themselves)
What’s really fucking annoying…those little pricks who sit there, proudly on their thrones of endless downloaded music, and have the nerve to open their smug mouthes and say things like, “Well, I liked _insert really talented/well known band here_ before everyone else, I kind of pioneered liking them.” This is ridiculous, and everyone has met someone like this.
Kind of like those same kids that will post amazing lyrics in their Facebook statuses and tweet about these bands that not a lot of people know about. And that’s awesome, right? You’re giving up your lone knowledge of this band that deserves to be heard! So, someone sees your status or tweet, or what the fuck ever, and they take their precious time to Google those lyrics. Those lyrics have struck something up inside of them that they want to know more about. They find the song, they find the band, they start listening to the music. So, then they start posting lyrics of those same songs. And what happens? That little bitch who started it all gets fucking offended. Saying things like, “I liked them first.” “I am the one who made them popular.”
News flash! You didn’t “discover” that band. Someone took their time, BECAUSE of YOU, to find a new musical interest. That’s fucking amazing. YOU have all kinds of influence and power, and you are going to be that petty?
What the fuck.
Another thing I hear a lot is, “Oh, _insert band here that has become incredibly popular really fast_ was playing Warped a few years back, and now their playing shows for the President, and everyone likes them. What sellouts.”
Again, what. the. fuck?
Correct me if I’m wrong. But YOU liked their music BEFORE they became “popular”, right? THAT’S WHAT BANDS DO. They dedicate their lives to the art, are away from their families, friends, and loved ones for long periods of time, just trying to make a life out of what they love. They put in the hours. They put in the blood, sweat, and tears to make a living doing what they really love. Few people have that type of dedication to anything, especially a form of art.
They DEDICATE their lives to making music for YOU, the consumer. And all of a sudden, all their hard work pays off, and their music hits MTV and you don’t like them anymore? That makes no fucking sense, you should be goddamn proud of them. Fuck you, you arrogant pricks.
I personally, am a huge fan of a lot of bands and a lot of different types of music… I am a huge fan of a lot of local bands, who are working fucking harder than anyone else I know to do what they love. If they ever make it to MTV and FUSE, I’m not going to sit there, perched upon my high horse, saying, “Yeah, well, I liked them first so they’re sellouts.”
Fuck all the negativity. Do what you love.
